Data literacy is not data science not everyone in this world needs to be a data… Now by definition, data literacy is the ability to read, work with, analyze, and argue with data-four skills that reside across a spectrum. Data is a valuable asset, but just like oil, it has to go through people and refinement to get value. And guess what that produces for us? Data and information! In this information economy, data has been called the new oil. The reality is, everything is being connected. Infect, it is very hard-pressed to find people who don’t have a computer in their pocket now, in a smartphone. The time in which we live has been called the fourth industrial revolution. It is real, and it is accessible to everybody. How do we decipher through it all? And not only decipher through it all how do we take it to make a smart, informed decision? Now, what if I told you that there is legitimately a skill in the world that everyone can learn- and not just learn, but get good at that will empower us to understand data and information better and then make a data-informed decision? Sound too good to be true? I promise it’s not. The world we live in today is producing so much instant access to information. Deepesh Kumar Srivastava, Assistant Professor in our Information Management and Data Science department, gave a really interesting talk about data literacy. These things exist, did you know that you need them? Dr. “All our schools barring one have achieved a ‘good’ status,” he said.Did you know that nowadays you need a refrigerator that has a touchscreen on it? And not just has a touch screen, but it can play a YouTube video for you, it can tell you the weather.
Clive Pierrepont, Head of Communications, said four schools have received positive feedback. Most of the schools owned by Taaleem, the second largest education provider in Dubai, have also received a favourable report. “Some schools have invested heavily in improving early years while others have improved the ways in which they track and assess student progress.” “Investment has been made to improve the quality of Arabic and Islamic studies,” he said. Ralph Tabberer, Chief of Schools, said they had invested in teacher training and quality enhancement. Seven other GEMS-run schools have received a ‘Good’ rating. “The staff and students have embraced a rigorous learning agenda, which has enabled outstanding learning to take place throughout the school,” she said. Mel Curtis, principal of GWIS, said the result reflects the ethos of the school. The schools have been applauded for student responsibility and learning skills, self-evaluation, safety measures, assessment procedures and parental engagement. The others cater to lower grade students. GEMS Wellington International School (GWIS) is the only provider of high school education to Kings Dubai is the only school to have retained its status. On the other hand, most of the private schools deemed outstanding in the first report have been downgraded, owning to tougher evaluation by the authority in Arabic and Islamic Education. GEMS Wellington International School and Kings Dubai School are the private schools. The outstanding public schools were Manhal Kindergarten, Al Nukhbah Model School and the Childhood Development Centre. In the report that has been released today, 73 schools have ranked ‘Good’, 106 are ‘Acceptable’ and 26 have been graded ‘Unsatisfactory’. The second round of DSIB inspections were conducted between October 2009 and March 2010. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) confirmed on May 4 that three public schools were among the five that received the rating of “outstanding” from the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau (DSIB).
